There’s no limit to the creativity you can develop through composition lessons. You might start by writing songs inspired by your favourite artists, then learn how to record and produce them at home using your laptop—or even your phone! Our tutors can walk you through the full songwriting process, from the spark of an idea to the final recording. As you grow, you might explore writing for other instruments like strings or horns, eventually mastering four-part harmony and orchestration. The possibilities are endless when it comes to learning composition.

Composition lessons often include some basic piano instruction, as playing piano alongside another instrument like guitar can be a huge advantage when it comes to arranging and writing music. Piano skills are especially useful when learning music theory and orchestrating your own pieces. Paul McCartney, one of the greatest songwriters of all time, often switches between guitar and piano when writing songs. And of course, many of the classical greats—Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn—were all pianists. That said, piano isn’t essential. Legendary artists like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Jimmy Page wrote unforgettable music using guitar alone. Even Ringo wrote a few solid tunes—yes, the drummer.

If you're more drawn to classical or jazz composition, having a solid grasp of music notation will help immensely. This can be covered in private lessons with your composition tutor, or you can enrol in one of our group online musicianship courses for a more budget-friendly option. Either way, you’ll receive a world-class music education from some of the best composition tutors Sydney has to offer. All of our tutors hold a Bachelor of Music or have received equivalent formal training.
