BASE Music has been teaching music theory lessons in Sydney for over 5 years. Our tutors have studied music at the highest level and have years of experience working with students of all ages. Over time, we’ve developed an engaging and accessible approach to teaching music theory that keeps students interested, no matter their starting level. While learning to read sheet music might not sound exciting to everyone, we’ve found fun and creative ways to get you there—using the music you love and combining it with practical pitch and rhythm development. By the end of each term, you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve learned!

Studying music theory gives you a deeper understanding of the music you listen to and enhances your overall music education, performance, and composition skills. Private music theory lessons are often taken alongside guitar, bass, drums, voice, or piano lessons. In fact, many of our instrument tutors incorporate music theory as part of their regular lessons when it’s relevant to your development. These theory elements are often specific to your instrument—for example, your guitar tutor might explain the theory behind a scale you’re working on, then show you how that scale helps build chords and progressions.

Some students choose to prepare for AMEB music theory exams, but this is entirely optional. Many students simply want to expand their general knowledge or explore specific topics like time signatures and polyrhythms. Your music theory tutor will guide you along a path suited to your interests, goals, and skill level.
